I chose the name Garden Party Bakery in memory of my best friend, Cathy. She would have loved the concept of sitting in her garden and having dessert and a glass of wine!! We had been friends since we were 18 and she always encouraged me to do what I enjoy. I enjoy baking and using my creative mind for various other things like crafting, sewing and decorating. So for me, this was the perfect forum to bring those passions together in one place.
Although I had taken home economics classes in jr. high and high school, I am mostly self taught in the art of baking. Give me a cookbook or a recipe that sounds yummy and I am all for trying it out.
Over the years I have made birthday cakes for family and friends, as well as baby shower cakes and assorted desserts for various occasions. My family loves my apple pie. I’ve been baking them since I was about 13 years old and think that I have perfected my recipe.
I decided a couple years back to take a cake design class through the local community college. It was taught by Ro Zinniger at Ro Z’s Sweet Art Studio. I loved it!! I got to brush up on techniques I’d used in the past and learned some new ones.
I joined the Creative Confection Club when it was started. It’s a group of individual cake artists and hobbyists that come together to share new ideas and talk about experiences with various cake medium (i.e.: fondant, gum paste, Isomalt, etc.) We also are involved with ArtSplash and have a great time sharing our themed designs with visitors to the event.
In early Oct. 2011, I was part of the Wicked Cake Ladies of the North at the Gourmet Expo Confectionery Artists Competition. We took 1st place!!
I have taken a couple of gum paste flower classes with Colette Peters, renowned author and owner of Colette’s Cakes in New York City, and Dianne Gruenberg, sugar paste artist and owner of Avenues -Sweet Choices. It was great to learn from two well known talents in the industry. I have also had the opportunity to view demonstrations sugar artist, Jacqueline Butler of Petalsweet Cakes.
I take every opportunity to learn new things that I can use in my craft and I am constantly on the lookout for inspirational ideas to create something fun and unique.
